Forms Of Therapy
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
- Delivers steady air pressure through a mask to keep the airway open. Most effective and most commonly prescribed treatment for OSA.
Oral Appliance Therapy (Mandibular Advancement Devices)
- Custom-made mouthpiece fitted by a specially trained dentist that moves the lower jaw forward to keep airway open.
Lifestyle Modifications (Important for All Patients)
- Weight loss (even 5–10% can significantly improve OSA), Avoid alcohol and sedatives, Sleep on your side (positional therapy), Regular exercise, Smoking cessation.
Positional Therapy
- Devices or wearables that prevent back sleeping are helpful for those where the apnea mainly occurs when lying on their back.
Surgical Options
- Used when CPAP/oral appliances fail or anatomy is a major factor. Common Procedures: Nasal surgery (septoplasty, turbinate reduction), Jaw advancement surgery (maxillomandibular advancement). Implant Option:
- Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (Inspire device)
An implanted device that stimulates the tongue muscle to prevent airway collapse. Good option for selected moderate–severe OSA patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.
Central Sleep Apnea is where the brain isn't sending signals to breath
- Requiring BiPAP or adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV)
- Treat underlying conditions (heart failure, neurological disease) - Adjust medications (e.g., opioids)
Which Treatment Is Best depends on:
- Severity (measured by AHI score), Body weight, Anatomy, Tolerance to devices and other health conditions
